CHCPRT025 Identify and report children and young people at risk

The unit CHCPRT025 – Identify and report children and young people at risk – equips individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to identify and respond to signs of abuse, neglect, or harm in children and young people. This unit is crucial for professionals working in sectors such as education, childcare, healthcare, and community services, where early detection and intervention can make a significant difference in the well-being of vulnerable children.

Throughout the course, participants will learn how to recognise indicators of physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect. The training covers legal and ethical responsibilities in reporting suspected harm, following workplace policies, and adhering to relevant state and federal legislation. Participants will also develop the ability to document, and report concerns accurately, communicate with relevant authorities, and support children and young people while maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity.

This unit applies to workers in a range of job roles providing services to children and young people including in community services and health contexts.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

Course Completion / Qualification Pathways

Upon completing this unit, participants will be equipped to confidently identify, respond to, and report situations where children or young people may be at risk, ensuring they fulfil their legal and ethical obligations to protect vulnerable individuals. This training is vital for safeguarding children and young people and contributing to their safety and well-being.

Students obtaining a ‘Competent’ result for all assessment activities contained in this course will receive a Statement of Attainment.

Target Learners

This course is recommended to all workers in childcare, education, community services, healthcare or related fields who are required to understand and comply with mandatory reporting responsibilities.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

This course does not have mandatory entry requirements as outlined in the training package.

However, Australian College has certain admission criteria for this course. Prospective students must:

  • be minimum 15 years of age or older at the time of enrolment. Parental consent is required from all students under the age of 18 years
  • complete a language, literacy and numeracy test prior to enrolment
  • have access to an approved operational early childhood and care environment to complete work placement requirements
  • have access to work colleagues or individuals prepared to participate in audio/video roleplays for specific assessment tasks
  • have access to children and young people, facilities, equipment and resources used in a real workplace
  • have access to Commonwealth and State/Territory relevant legislation
  • obtain their Unique Student Identifier (USI) and provide it to Australian College. Information on how to obtain a USI can be found here: https://www.usi.gov.au/students/get-a-usi
  • agree to comply with Australian College policies and procedures as published on the website and outlined in the Student Handbook.
  • pay all fees as outlined in the Enrolment Terms and Conditions.

Students must have access to and be able to operate:

  • An internet-enabled PC/Laptop or similar running a current operating system (e.g. Windows 10 or Mac OSX)
  • An audio/video recording device (such as a mobile phone) for the purpose of preparing audio/video assessment recordings
  • Microsoft Office (or compatible software)
  • Current web browser (e.g., Chrome)
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader or another PDF document viewer
  • Valid email address

Childcare Workplace Requirements:

  • Working with Children Check (WWCC) or Blue Card (State Specific)
  • Health checks (where required by the childcare centre)
  • Current immunisation records

Overseas Students Policy

This course is not available to students on an Overseas Student Visa.

As defined in the ESOS Act 2000, Overseas students are not eligible to apply to enrol in this nationally recognised course, nor are they eligible for certification. Please refer to the Enrolment Terms and Conditions.

DELIVERY AND ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

This course is delivered using an asynchronous study methodology, utilising mainly online delivery (eLearning) of training materials supported with emails and phone calls with the trainer and assessor, on request.

Self-paced completed online in your own time, at your own pace. We provide our students ongoing support throughout the course duration via telephone, emails and/or virtual online meetings.

Assessments

To ensure we gather all types of evidence as required by the training package and unit requirements, various assessment methods are being used to assess the student’s competencies.

Following are assessment methods used for this qualification:

  • Knowledge/Theory based assessment consisting of questions and answers
  • Case Studies – includes analysis of four (4) case studies and answering questions
  • Practical Assignment – to be completed in a simulated environment or in a real workplace using organisational documents such as policies and procedures, job descriptions, service contracts, code of conduct, code of ethics, employee handbook, etc) – includes role-plays.

Audio/video recordings of practical demonstration such as roleplays, interacting with children and parents, etc. At the beginning of the recording, please hold your photo ID in front of the camera for up to 10 seconds in such way that the information on the card can be seen clearly. Videos must be of good quality and clearly demonstrate the tasks being undertaken. A qualified assessor will view the video recordings against the benchmark criteria and mark the practical demonstration. All assessment criteria must be met to achieve competency.

WORK PLACEMENT / EXPERIENCE

This course does not require mandatory work placement.

However, Australian College recommends students to have access to a real work environment for them to practice and complete assessment tasks using specific workplace documentation, resources and equipment such as:

  • organisational policies and procedures
  • access to children and young people, facilities, equipment and resources that reflect real working conditions and model industry operating conditions and contingencies
  • access to relevant Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation

*Note: To access a real workplace, eligible students are required to hold a Working With Children Check or Blue Card (applicable for their state/territory in which they are or will be working). Any costs for these checks will be paid by the student. Students are advised that the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) recommends immunisation for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and influenza (as applicable in accordance with local jurisdictions), prior to commencing any work placement. Students to check with their workplace on all or specific requirements for the centre.

RPL / CREDIT TRANSFER

RPL and Credit Transfer is available for all students to consider. Students will be provided with information about RPL and Credit Transfer prior to enrolment. Australian College will recognise the AQF qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by other RTO’s, upon verification with the issuing organisation.
