Team Building Ideas

Apr 25, 2019 | Australian College

There are probably a million things that you can do to build strong team rapport. Whenever you participate in and complete a team building activity, you will have a better understanding of your teammates’ interests, strengths, and weaknesses and learn the importance of teamwork. Aside from that, a great level of trust and accountability will be developed within your team that’s why it’s an integral part of establishing a more positive and conducive working environment.

“Individual commitment to a group effort

– that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

“• Vince Lombardi

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”

“• Henry Ford

“Unity is strength… When there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.”

“• Mattie Stepanek

Here are some team building ideas that can work as ice-breakers and help create a culture of teamwork in the workplace:

Charades
This is a simple and fun game suitable for all ages and encourages engagement and fosters healthy competition.

Team size:
4 players or more. 2 teams.

How to play: Choose interesting topics such as songs, movies, celebrities or long phrases to put on pieces of paper. Fold the paper in half and put in a container. A player from each team will draw a piece of paper and act out the words and let the other member of the team guess what’s being portrayed. The team who gets the most answers right wins.

Heads Up! (What’s my name?)
This is also another type of guessing game and the questions should only be answered by “Yes” or “No”.

Team size:
4 players or more.

How to play: Write a word or words on a sticky note and stick it to the player’s forehead. The player then asks the group yes or no questions in the attempt to figure out what’s written on the sticky note. Set a time limit to keep each round short and succinct.

Various Board Games
Nothing beats traditional board games! You can now enjoy the ones that were based on television shows such as Family Feud, Deal or No Deal, The Amazing Race, The Price is Right, Trivial Pursuit, Pandemic or Battleship.

These types of games are not for everyone, so ask your team what they have in mind and be open to ideas. You can even try and organise physical activities such as sports games, wall climbing, hiking or fitness boot camp classes!
