Welcome to Catherine’s world of editing, proofreading and publishing!

Catherine brings more than 20 years of publishing experience as an editor, features editor, sub-editor, production editor and writer on many publications to her new role as tutor. With a wealth of contacts behind her Catherine now works as a freelance editor, researcher and writer from home for consumer magazines and corporate publications.

After graduating with a Communications degree from Mitchell College of Advanced Education in 1986, Catherine started her career as a reporter and sub-editor in Wagga Wagga. Since that early time she has travelled around the world, worked for major publications including Better Homes and Gardens and Mode BRIDES and for magazine publishers Australian Consolidated Press, Murdoch Magazines and the Federal Publishing Company.

Catherine is extremely versatile, having gained extensive experience in writing, editing and proofreading, as well as compiling editorial features, commissioning freelance writers and photographers, liaising with television producers for TV/magazine segments and compiling product pages and competitions. With a love for the industry and a desire to extend her skills across many roles, Catherine has also become proficient in desktop publishing, production and pre-press.

I feel it is good for an editor to have a range of skills,” Catherine says. “I like to encourage my students to learn as much as they can. In this way I feel they are better prepared for a range of positions in a variety of fields.”

Catherine is keen to help her students develop a successful career in the publishing industry by sharing her years of experience. For example, she warns of the impact of sloppy or careless proofreading.

Whether you are working on a national newspaper, a consumer magazine or an internal office report, the accuracy of details is extremely important,” she says. “For example, a wrong phone number or price, or an incorrect measure of an ingredient in a recipe printed in a mass circulation title, can lead to many calls from disgruntled readers seeking the correct information—and this can earn you the wrath of your colleagues!

With Catherine’s expertise, guidance and support we know you will thoroughly enjoy learning professional book editing, proofreading and publishing.
